Reflection
Wow, I still can't believe that the first semester of our senior year is over. It was a stressful journey through the world of college applications, but thankfully we are now all done with that! :D
I am really glad I took this course because we got to learn about and discuss many important issues that are taking place in the Dominican Republic and abroad. I don't tend to follow the news closely, much less discuss them with others or take the time to reflect about them and generate my own opinion about them. Thanks to this class, I was able to defy this tendency and become a more informed and reflective citizen of our community and world. I found it really insightful to learn about the massively widespread issues of hunger and child deaths, which are essential problems that we know how to and have a duty to solve, but that we do not devote nearly as much enough attention to them as they deserve. I also found our exploration of ISIS to be very informative and interesting, since I had not previously gotten a glimpse of their inside workings. The process of making an infographic was a nice way for us to individually explore a topic of personal interest, but more importantly, it made us prove to ourselves that if we want to share a message about an issue we care about, we are perfectly capable of conveying it effectively if we are willing to explore the many tools of technology.
Another aspect about this class that I really appreciate is that it was laid-back and provided a time to learn in a casual and relaxed environment. It was helpful in fighting the stress of this semester, and the time we were given to catch up on work was extremely valuable. Thank you Ms. Costales!
If I had to suggest something to make this course better, it would be to organize a field trip to see current issues in action. It's sad that the TED event happened during a busy time and we couldn't attend, but I think it would have been an enriching experience. It doesn't have to be as special as this, though; for example, going to a local public school would be a great way to see education issues in action.
I am very thankful to Ms. Costales and the awesome class members for this class! I wish you all a happy second semester! :P
