Gender Issues Review
The objectification of both men and women is a problem that has been present in society since men grew their first crops. In this class we talked a lot about modern day Gender Issues, including how women are normally sexualized in media and how men and women have impossible expectations placed on them by our society. We saw various examples and people explaining this phenomenon and how it's something that truly impacts the development of boys and girls since their exposed to this at a very young age. We searched for examples of this objectification of both men and women to be able to post on Instagram, and what we found was mostly shocking.
We also discussed a lot about the expectations of men to be these hulking, muscular warriors who do not express their emotions and dominate women. We all talked about how crazy it is for magazines to edit and photoshop women who are already beautiful into what can sometimes be out of this world, perfected humans. We men even agreed that this photoshops are creepier and less real than the actual thing. There was also discussion about how this sort of stuff affected women in developmental stages and adult stages. To no ones surprise, this gave a huge bruise to young men's self esteem which could follow them into pretty late years. The popular consensus is that women "run like girls" or "act like girls" which is true they act and run like girls because they are girls but their ability to do these are just as well executed as done by men.
Overall are discussions this quarter were very interesting, and I've personally felt that I learned a lot about what goes on day to day media and how they push a very unhealthy agenda. Hopefully this discussions have made me prepare to identify those harmful ads and how to just ignore them. I truly hope that with the larger awareness on this topic that we as a society manage to fight back this stupid idea of what the ideal women and men and instead bring the idea that the ideal person is one who is just themselves.
