Gender Issues

This cycle in Media Literacy and Current Events we learned about gender issues. At first we focused in perception of woman in the media. Woman are heavily Photoshopped in ads and set the beauty standard really high. Normal women feel bad that they don’t look like the photoshopped ad and development a low self-esteem. Low self-esteem leds women to develop eating disorder or get depression. The sexualization of men also happens in the media. Man are photoshopped to look bigger and stronger. Even though men body are not as idolized in real life than women. In class we also created a list of characteristics about a human, man and woman. This list revealed the female and male stereotypes. Women are perceived to be soft and have to be beautiful. A man has to provide for the home, and be ambitious. Lastly in this cycle we addressed double standards with man and woman. Man are not permitted to be emotional and that all men are perceived as predators. Another double standard in men that I found to be very true is that men can not give each other compliments, but women get each other compliments a lot. I like everything we learned this cycle because it open my eyes in realizing that men also face problems with gender issues. Both genders have a long way to go before the problems can be fixed.
