Social Progress Index
Recently countries have started to use the Social Progress Index to measure their progress. Not to be confused with the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) the Social Progress Index is different and measures growth based on a country's issues and where a country can improve. This is a start to a new method of measurement and focuses on the countries social issues as well as its economic issues.
On the Social Progress Index site I viewed the Dominican Republic's statistics as I currently reside in the Dominican Republic. The world's average was a 61 out of 100 and the Dominican Republic actually fared better than what I thought it would. The Dominican Republic averaged a 62.47. While this is promising for the country and demonstrates signs of improvement it still lacks in comparison to other countries. For example the Dominican Republic scored a 74.32 in water which is very good but leaves room for improvement. Furthermore the Dominican Republic has implemented a brand new 911 system to aid in emergencies. Moreover the Dominican Republic still has a huge problem with their wealth distribution. This causes huge inconsistencies in the country's society. Only the richest are able to afford a good education and a college education while the rest of the country struggles to gain a decent education and cannot afford a college education. This creates problems in the country as most of the people remain uneducated and then cannot get a good job with a good salary. While the country shows signs of improvement it still has much to work on in order to raise their score.
