Social Progress Index

Recently countries have been started to be measured by their progress and innovations in helping their own people. Some of you may think of this as the GDP, but in fact, it is not the GDP but the SPI. SPI or Social Progress Index measures a country's growth based on issues this country's issues and spots of improvement. World leaders and governments have worked together to create this new way to measure a country's improvement.

In this website, I found information for the Dominican Republic, my native country. In there I found the grade for the Dominican Republic was 62.47 when the world average is 61. Right now the Dominican Republic is in place for improvement, although recently the government has implemented new health and education plans. For health, the government created a 911 system currently working in major cities of the country. The government hasn't given up, they keep growing in order to cover everyone in the country with efficient emergency health coverage. Recently, el Dario Contreras, one of the biggest public hospitals in the country, was reconstructed and remodeled. As a matter of fact the SPI states that the "Dominican Republic performs best on Nutrition and Basic Medical Care," and these are 2 ways in which they have been working on performing best. On the other side, education in the Dominican Republic is very weak as the SPI states it has space for improving advanced education. In the Dominican Republic, public schools children only receive from about 3 to 4 hours of education per day. Some teachers are not even educated enough to teach. And teachers have to work two shifts to cover their economic needs. Although the country has all these issues with education, the president is working on extending hours of education for the entire Dominican population. The Dominican Republic is at an ok position, but we are working on improving our population's wellbeing which is what the SPI measures.
