Global Citizen
Global Citizenship. What is it? Who are they? What do
they do? Many people don’t understand what it means to be a global citizen or
how they even become one. But aren’t we all already global citizens? A Global
Citizen is someone who doesn’t tie himself down to just his home country or the
current country they reside in. they think of the world as a whole not little
pieces that we can pick and choose. These
people make sure that all places that are struck by poverty get the aid they
need. One example would be a women in Washington D.C called Davina. She started
up a program to gather pennies from her friends and neighbors so that they
could be sent to Nigeria to set up schools for girls. In 2013 about 120 girls
was attending the schools that Davina and others help fund. This is an act that
a Global Citizen would do. Of course we don’t expect automatic results like
this but we do expect that people actually try to help change these issues.
Global Citizens had made big events happen during the same weeks and places
that world leaders were meeting. These events did grab the attention of the
leaders and they have promised to make changes but we aren’t seeing many of
these changes. In fact these changes hardly happen because of the change of
power in the government makes it unstable for funds to help these distraught
people in horrible situations. The
leaders always use the excuse that they need to worry more about their own
country than someone else’s. But see, that’s the big issues people think that since
it’s not within their own political border they don’t care. The thing is we
should care. We may have political borders but we still share the same planet
so it doesn’t make sense to not help. And before we think of ways to help
others we first need to change the way we think.
