World Peace, and the Possibility of WW3

With two world wars to occupy our history books, and a very potential third now passed—the Cold War—the idea of a third world war was ever a possibility for present day society, but increasingly apparent trends are making it clear that, if a ‘third world war’ does eventually occur, it probably will not happen by conventional standards. Just as the first world war was the culmination of a radical change in the style of warfare conducted by countries, due to innovations in technology and strategy, a potential ‘third world war’ probably will demonstrate the same patterns that have surfaced in the most recent wars and ongoing conflicts, being the new warfare methods of clandestine terrorist cells, which are not bound to one country’s borders, or even to a tangible army. Terrorism is one of the greatest threats that citizens of the world face today. However, as increasingly apparent as it is that terrorism is becoming a predominant method of fighting, the causes of terrorism are becoming just as evident. It is clear that terrorism finds fertile ground in the minds of youth growing up in areas of extreme poverty and lack of infrastructure, or in areas wracked by warfare and suffering. It is most likely very difficult to radicalize a youth who has enough food to eat, a house to live in, public facilities and an education to gives him or her perspective on what methods can actually help to make the world a better place. Therefore, it seems clear that one of the most effective ways to prevent an all out world war is to address the complex root issues which interweave to create a web of hate and violence.

However, terrorism is obviously not the only threat of warfare that is facing citizens of the world today. There are still egotistical politicians and imperialistic and neo-imperialistic countries which seem to be encroaching on the prospect of peace in the future. There needs to be a change in the world’s political systems which contribute to unhappiness and poverty in the world, as well as the mindsets that perpetuate them.
