Climate Change

By now we all know that Global Warming is affecting the entire world, but the Arctic Tundra is prime victim to the environmental decisions of mankind. The burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and humans’ increasing carbon footprint are leading the way to the melting of ice, which will eventually leave animals without a habitat, and release even more toxic amounts of carbon dioxide into our breathable air. The result of melting glaciers is causing sea levels to rise significantly and is leaving animals with a loss of ice habitat, “Many scientists and conservationists fear that there may be far fewer polar bears in the next 10 years, thanks mostly to the effects of climate change. Polar bears use sea ice as a platform to reach their prey and summer sea ice is melting fast. Another outcome of global warming is the melting of the permafrost. Locked inside 20,000 years of ice are the remains of millions of animals and plants who have died over the years, frozen “there is two and a half times more carbon locked away […] then there is in the atmosphere today, which means that its melting “brings the potential release of a staggering amount of methane and carbon dioxide, which is like adding an accelerator to the fire that is global warming." In order to withstand the crisis humans must take action and commit to alternate energy sources to reduce the release of greenhouse gasses into our atmosphere.

In class yesterday we watched videos about how humans are playing with Earth. It is important to remember that humans need nature, but nature does not need humans. We must believe that change is possible and do everything in our power to protect nature.
