Summary of Learning
I went in this class relieved that the awful, boring, and dream-killing SAT Prep class was finally over. Barely passing the math section, I finished the semester on a bad note. I was feeling uninspired and very discouraged that the SAT is supposed to dictate my future, when it did not accurately represent any actual skill of mine. Thankfully, that awful class was over and I could finally be in my element again with the current events class. The current events class was the polar opposite of SAT Prep in that it challenged my world views, stimulated my creativity, and prompted me to write insightful blogs where I was able to develop my opinions. In this class we tackled serious and pressing events of today's world including the Syrian Immigration Crisis, climate change, and poverty. We also explored the different forms of using social media, and we learned about various methods of providing solutions for issues. I can confidently say that I really developed my writing skills and I have been made aware of so many issues in the world that I had not been formally exposed to. For me, the most interesting topics were the controversial ones such as the legalization of marijuana and even gender inequality (although that shouldn't be considered controversial). In the argument for marijuana I had not even considered the medicinal part of it. It really opened my eyes to the contrast between a pill with tons of chemicals and toxic ingredients to a plants which is nearly as effective, if not even better. Thanks to the issues I was exposed to in the current events class, I will be more committed to reading the news more frequently and being more aware globally. This has been a great semester!
Thank you Luisa! High compliment indeed coming from you.
