Syrian Refugee Crisis
The world is currently facing a world crisis. Syria’s civil war has created the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Half the country’s pre-war population, more than 11 million people, have been killed or forced to flee their homes. Everyday they risk their life, looking for a better tomorrow. Trying to make their way into Europe to find shelter, and a chance to reconstruct their lives. However, instead of the world uniting to help these victims, it has created a large division. Many countries have stated that their economy cannot support so many people, or are afraid of a increasing the Muslim population and their national security. But they are wrong, Syrians are highly educated and hardworking people, that are willing to take any job to provide for their families. Thus, currently only 4% of the European population is Muslim, and if they take in all the refugees it would only increase to a 5%. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 1,011,700 migrants arrived by sea in 2015, and almost 34,900 by land to Europe. With 1.3 million migrants applying for asylum in the 28 member states of the European Union, Norway and Switzerland in 2015.
These refugees are humans, just like the rest of us, that are escaping chaos. Newborns, children, teenagers, young adults with a bright future ahead of them living in rooms with no heat or running water, in abandoned chicken coops and in storage sheds, with no sanitation or clean water. Not to mention, that the routes they take are extremely dangerous, and many die in their way to new land. It is time for all of us to unite as one world, one community, to help our fellow brothers and sisters. Because we are all citizens of the world, and it's our moral duty to help one another. Put yourself in their shoes.
