Gender Equality!

Of all the global goals the one I feel is the most important is gender equality. Gender inequality refers to any form of violence and discrimination towards women specifically because men are praised by society. It can be verbal abuse, not letting them participate in some activity, sexual assault, among other things that are very commonly happening to women these days. Inequality is a problem that is being faced worldwide and we need to attack it. In most society women have been set certain gender roles. For example they stay home to clean the house and take care of the children. On the other hand, males go out to work and earn money for the family. This is unfair both men and women can do the same jobs and they should not be decided by society and its norms what roles they are intended to follow.  I feel connected to this goal because in the Dominican Republic this is a huge problem. Men mistreat many women and most of the time society deprecates women, underestimating their capabilities. It is really tough to see women in the “barrios” sitting down in a chair or standing behind the kitchen counter not doing much because when they went to the job interview they decline her the position because they said it was a “men’s job.” Not only that but women also get deprived of an education. This is very sad but it is a reality in this country. As a young women in the Dominican society I want to help reduce gender inequality. Last year I joined Project Girl, student led club that works with girls in Batey Lecheria. One of the clubs main goals is to empower girls so that they can stand for themselves and strive in this society. I have been very involved with this club because I hope that somehow we can make a change for these poor girls future. This is a major goal that needs attention and needs to be resolved. Lets all join forces for gender equality!
