Poverty in DR

I grew up with my eyes closed, traveling the world, going to school with a chofer, and arriving everyday from school with food served. I live in the Dominican Republic, a small island in the Caribbean, next to Haiti. According to the Borgen Project, “More than a third of the Dominican Republic lives on less than $1.25 a day and over 20 percent of the country lives in extreme poverty.” I have always known that the majority of my country is poor; everyday I see it in the streets, Haitians selling fresh mangos and kids cleaning your windows to make a living. But my eyes were closed, I never stopped and really thought of others and poverty, I was blind to the reality of this country. According to the organization SOS Children’s Villages, Poverty remains a widespread phenomenon in the Dominican Republic. Approximately one fifth of all Dominicans live in shacks, the vast majority of them without access to running water, proper sanitation and electricity.” I opened my eyes and arms to make a difference.  I went to Jarabacoa, I had a  remarkable experience with Rustic Pathways. I became a mature woman, realizing there is extreme poverty in this small community and how blessed I am. In Rustic Pathways I learned that every step makes a diffrence. Every effort matters. So the world should help and contribute to make a difference with poverty and education.
