Hunger/Poverty - Jaime Alvarez

By the time
you finish reading this passage (if it takes you two minutes) at least 12
children
will die because of hunger. Hunger which directly correlates with
poverty is something the
whole world is going through, but most importantly our young
generations. Throughout the
brief weeks in our class we have seen several jaw-dropping statistics
and TED talks concerning
this topic. First off we saw iconic singer Bono’s talk. In this one we
learned about how by 2030
we can expect a good side to poverty. Moreover, we heard about
shocking stats like how: 5.9
million children under
the age of 5 died in 2015, more than half of these early child deaths are
due to conditions that
could be prevented or treated with access to simple, affordable
interventions. We also
learned about how Leading causes of death in under-5 children are due
to famine and
malnutrition, pneumonia, birth asphyxia, diarrhea and malaria, and how about
45% of all child deaths
are linked to malnutrition and how Children in sub-Saharan Africa are
more than 14 times more
likely to die before the age of 5 than children in developed regions.
This shocking facts prove
a change needs to be made! Many institutions like “toca mi Corazon”
, Hogar del niño etc. can
help and accept volounteers willing to make a difference. What are
you waiting for? Go out
there! As Aristotle said Poverty is the parent
of revolution
and crime."
