Poverty, hunger and child mortality
How can we become responsible citizens of the world? How can we solve one of the most leading issues: poverty that subsequently contributes to an increase in child mortality? We have a duty to be aware of what’s going on all over the world and actively participate in devising sustainable poverty reduction solutions. We have to open our eyes and ears to know that this globalized world needs our attention and help. So our class watched several ted-talks regarding child mortality and poverty for this cycle. Moreover, as a responsible member of the community, we looked for places of grinding poverty especially in here, Dominican Republic. I’ve gone to several community service trips to the rural areas of DR. Frankly speaking, I was shocked by their poor and unsanitary living condition. It usually took us about 1-2 hours to get there. It wasn’t far away from where most of us live; however, everything was different. They were suffering from lack of water, housings, foods, electricity and education. I was ashamed by the fact that people who live in impoverished areas were really in need of everything I’ve been taking granted. Likewise, we are indifferent and oblivious to the poverty and deprivation. Paul David Hewson who is also known as his stage name Bono gave a ted-talk called “The good news on poverty”. Bono has used his music and fame to draw attention to fight against extreme poverty. He once said, “we know that the biggest disease of all is not a disease. It's corruption. But there's a vaccine for that too. It's called transparency, open data sets”. I also strongly agree with his idea. “We’re going to win if we work together as one, because the power of the people is so much stronger than the people in power”, Bono insisted. I think a little help from everyone will change the world and be a proud citizen. What I meant by a little help doesn’t mean making a big donation or an official organization. Just like we did in class or school, we should try to get involved in activities or clubs such as Sea Savers, TECHO, Project girl etc to improve the living condition or environment of our community and ultimately the world.
