Poverty

This is my second year involved in Hogar del Niño and our purpose is to help children our age or younger have a brighter future by providing their basic needs to their community. Children at Hogar del Niño are not orphans, but are children with parents that deal with abuse, prostitution, addiction and economic problems. The first time I visited Hogar del Niño, a nun came and sat next to me and told me something that changed my life forever. She told me the story of one kid. This kid's mother is a prostitute and she leaves him alone every day when she goes to work without food, water or somebody to take care of him. The nun said she found him near a trash can eating left overs because sometimes his mother wouldn't return for days. Currently, he is living at Hogar deal Niño, but the mom has no clue where the kid is living. The environment he was living exposed him to all kinds of dangerous. This kid is a victim of poverty, like the rest of the children at el Hogar. Poverty affects their education, their happiness and their healthy lifestyle. This is why each month we try to fundraise money for this home, so they can teach children how to read and to communicate positively with humans because the future of our country involves every single children in the Dominican Republic. The rest of the children that have this same circumstances and don't have the option of being at Hogar del Niño are exposed to become thieves, dealers, and addicts like their parent. This is why it is so important to pay attention to poverty in your countries because it is linked with a person's education, well being and future. Sometimes the greatest way to help your community is to show others that you are their and willing to support their cause and this is the reason why I monthly assist at Hogar del Niño.
