Water Scarcity-Roxana Rizek
Our bodies are
composed 80% of water, yet according to the water organization 1 in 10 people
lack access to safe water and 1 in 3 lack access to a toilet. More people have
a mobile phone than a toilet. You may be thinking that having a toilet, taking
a bath, washing your hands is random and simple, but 663 million people don’t
have easy access to clean water: the most important substance to maintain life
on earth. This is a basic human right.
At the
mountainous center of South America, Bolivia’s complex struggles with the
scarcity and commodification of water, as well as in the mountains parts of the
Dominican Republic. This summer I had a remarkable experience. I went to
Jarabacoa, with an organization called Rustic Pathways, I was part of the
construction of an aqueduct, for 60 families in the community of Los Guaragaos.
This was a very emotional challenge for me, seeing my
country in such poverty and lacking a basic source of life, But at the same
time meeting members of the community that were always willing to help. After
seeing this project accomplished I realized that everything is possible and
that the small contributions, make the biggest difference.
Nice Roxaana...I can see it was a great experience for you!
